Patterns of Meteorological Drought Using Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index for Massili Basin, Burkina Faso

As a Semi-arid country, Burkina Faso is highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters such as drought and flood. Analyzing signature therefore key factor in advocating climate change adaptation at the local scale. In this study, Spatiotemporal trends of were conducted for period 1960–2021 within Massili Basin using standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) package R. The non-parametric method (Mann–Kendall) was then used test monotonic trend, whereas magnitude estimated Sen's method. Accordingly, result revealed that during 1960-1979, mean value SPEI varies from 0.06 0.71; over 1980 2009, -0.08 -0.88 last decades (2010 2021), ranges 0.05 0.75. Normal middle wet conditions thus observed periods 1960-1979 2010-2021 while (1980-2009) depicts condition. Mann-Kendall results show decreasing trend SPEI-3 SPEI-24 with Z - 0.784 -0.530 respectively. A slightly increasing SPEI-6 SPEI-12 ranging 0.598 1.917 decrease indicated by sens’ slope value, which -0.0014 -0.00010 increase 0.00011 0.00037 SPEI-12. This study highlights importance examining past features obtain essential information assist designing implementing efficient water resources management strategies Basin.
